SYRIZA MEP, Former Minister of Tourism

Elena Kountoura is a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) representing SYRIZA- Progressive Alliance.

During her five-year tenure in the European Parliament, she was the rapporteur for two landmark reports: the report on the 'European Union Road Safety Policy Framework up to 2030' and the report on the 'Impact of Intimate Partner Violence and Custody Rights on Women and Children.

Before her tenure as an MEP, she served as the Minister of Tourism of Greece from 2015 to 2019. During her term, she launched Greece's first national regional tourism policy for "Tourism 365 days a year in Greece," achieving a 40% increase in arrivals and a 35% increase in revenue. Her efforts earned international recognition, including the award for Best Tourism Minister in the world at the Berlin International Exhibition in 2019 and the title of Global Champion for Tourism in Greece by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).

Elena Kountoura is also the President of Europa Donna Hellas, the Greek branch of the European organization EUROPADONNA, advocating for better rights and services for breast cancer patients. She is a member of the MEPs Against Cancer group.

In her 20-year political career since 2004, she has been elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) six times in the Athens A' Constituency.

Before her political career, from 1984 to 1996, Elena Kountoura had an international career in the fashion industry.

From 1996 to 2003, she served as a director at popular magazines in Greece focusing on women, lifestyle, home, and family.

She has been recognized for her support of the Greek Paralympic Volunteerism and was honored as a Goodwill Ambassador for Social Volunteerism by the Hellenic State in 2007.

Elena Kountoura has actively supported numerous international and Greek non-profit organizations such as UNESCO, UNICEF, FRONTIDA and ANASA, emphasizing in human rights, health, environment, women, children, combating domestic violence, and volunteering.

She holds a degree in Physical Education and Sports Science (T.E.F.A.A.) from the University of Athens (Kapodistrian).

Elena Kountoura speaks fluently three foreign languages: English, French, and Spanish.
