Dr. Mary E. Constantoglou is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Tourism Management at the University of Patras, specializing in destination management and crisis management in tourism. She also teaches at the Hellenic Open University in undergraduate and postgraduate programs, and has served as Course Coordinator in the Master's Program “Cultural Policy and Development” at the Open University of Cyprus. She has extensive teaching experience as a lecturer in the Department of Cultural Technology and Communication and the Department of Economics and Tourism Management both at the University of the Aegean.
She holds a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, a Master’s degree in Environmental Policy and Management, and a PhD in Business Administration. Her doctoral research focused on spatial tourism planning and spatial decision making for coastal and insular areas with the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Fuzzy Logic.
She has extensive experience at both academic and administrative levels. She has served as CEO of the Development Agency of the North Aegean Region (Regional Development Company of North Aegean S.A.), of which she was a founding member, and as General Manager and Scientific Director of the Research, Education, Innovation and Development Company of the North Aegean Region S.A. (ELORIS S.A.), the Destination Management Organization for the North Aegean Region. In these roles, she has led the design and implementation of projects linking research, innovation, entrepreneurship, destination management, and regional development, with funding from both national and EU sources.
In her research career, she has participated in and implemented over 50 national and European projects (Interreg MED, Interreg Europe, Balkan, Horizon, Erasmus+, EuropeAid, Equal, Leader+, etc.), focusing on sustainable tourism development, strategic and maritime spatial planning, cultural heritage, circular economy, destination management, the dual transition in tourism, and social innovation.
Her research interests include sustainable tourism, Destination Management and Marketing Organizations (DMMOs), strategic and tourism planning, Decision Support Systems for tourism, Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), spatial analysis and mapping using GIS, documentation, promotion, and enhancement of cultural heritage, cultural tourism, historical cartography and its 3D representation, as well as the sharing economy with a focus on tourism.
Her published work includes more than 50 scientific papers in peer-reviewed international journals, edited volumes, and conference proceedings, with over 500 citations. She has authored chapters in international edited volumes (Springer, Routledge, Edward Elgar, etc.), while her papers were published in reputable journals.
She is a member of international scientific networks, a reviewer for leading journals such as Annals of Tourism Research, Tourism Management, and Tourism Geographies, and has been recognized as an Outstanding Reviewer by Tourism Management. She has presented her work at international conferences in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
